The Forbidden

Shhhh! Don't tell Lee but I took Jackson to the Raleigh Farmer's Market this morning and we had a GREAT time (besides the fact that it was 175 degrees outside and Jackson mentioned more than once that he was sweating like a hot dog). But, this little trip must be kept a secret from Lee.

You see, several weeks ago I mentioned to Lee that I wanted to go to the Raleigh Farmer's Market. He said he would never go there as a shopper because they are his competition. Huh?? I mean I know he runs a produce company but I didnt understand how a farmers market - where farmers go to sell their goods- could compete with a large produce company that delivers produce in bulk in refrigerated trucks directly to the door of restaurants.

So - I didnt ask him to go again. I just went by myself. And had a great time. Oh yeah, I took Jack also. He had a great time too. The vendors let you try their fruit and veggies before you buy. Jackson was so enjoying that part that he would just walk up to a table and pop a blueberry/blackberry/grape tomato in his mouth - and not a blueberry/blackberry/grape tomato out of the "Try Me" baskets. They had fresh flowers, cheeses, pastries and even a restaurant featuring entrees made only with Farmers Market items (we didnt eat here - I just pretended to look at a menu so we could enjoy the a/c in hopes that Jackson would quit mentioning that he was sweating like a hot dog. Have I mentioned how LOUD he is these days??).

Anyways, we got some GREAT produce. I haven't been impressed with the produce at Harris Teeter (even thought I am starting to fall in love with Harris Teeter). Their produce is either expensive or not so great looking or both and I miss the little side of the road produce stands I used to frequent in SC (I guess they are illegal here in oh-so-beautiful, not a leaf out of place Cary). We were thoroughly enjoying a very juicy peach while walking through the market...

And then I saw it - a chef -fully decked out in his chef outfit - buying produce (in bulk) from one of the farmers. He had his truck loaded down with corn and potatoes and canteloupe. Ohhhh, now I get it. Competition.

So, just remember, DO NOT mention this little trip to Lee. Or the fact that I will probably be going again. Soon. Even if it does mean we will be sweating like hot dogs.
